The South Korean government is considering raising the level of social distancing measures in the Seoul metropolitan area (Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Incheon) where COVID-19 infections are rapidly spreading. If the level is raised, it is pointed out that it could reach Level 4, the highest level of the new social distancing system reorganized into Levels 1-4.
Son Young-rae, head of the social strategy team at the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, told reporters on the 8th, "We are holding daily meetings with local governments in the Seoul metropolitan area with the possibility of raising the level in mind." He also explained, "While the Seoul metropolitan area as a whole is slightly below the Level 4 criteria, Seoul is approaching the Level 4 criteria."
The average number of new community infections in Seoul over the past week (July 1-7) was 387.4, approaching the application criteria for Level 4 of the new social distancing system (389 people).
Given this situation, the government is reportedly discussing raising the level for Seoul City only. If Level 4 is implemented, private gatherings of three or more people after 6 PM will be prohibited, and events such as briefings and commemorative ceremonies will be banned. Assemblies and events other than solo demonstrations will be completely prohibited, and only relatives will be allowed to attend weddings and funerals.
