SM Entertainment is launching a special project with global video platform "YouTube" to showcase the history of K-pop.
SM Entertainment (hereinafter SM) and YouTube announced on the 4th at an online event that they will launch the "Remastering Project" to "introduce diverse content to global K-pop fandom and contribute to the growth of the Korean music industry."
This remastering project involves remastering K-pop music videos that have been loved for decades to a high-quality suitable for digital platforms and releasing them sequentially. With the global resurgence of K-pop, we will re-examine the history of K-pop and re-interpret and deliver K-pop through various joint marketing efforts between SM and YouTube.
SM CEO Lee Sung-soo stated, "Music videos are precious assets of SM that contain everything SM pursues and desires, and are comprehensive content that can be called the history of K-pop, representing SM's heritage that remains unchanged over time." He added, "Through this special collaboration with YouTube, we plan to release over 300 remastered music videos and audio sources. We will introduce the history and evolution of K-pop to global music fans through YouTube original content and various campaigns, and reveal K-pop's future plans."
SM's first-generation idol group H.O.T., and second-generation idol groups TVXQ!, Super Junior, and Girls' Generation were the protagonists who led the globalization of K-pop. SM aims to bring K-pop of the past to the present, shed new light on it, and thereby expand K-pop.
CEO Lee Sung-soo explained, "Although we wanted to upload videos of groups like H.O.T. in high definition, there were technical limitations. However, as technology has advanced, we felt the time was right." YouTube Executive Director Lee Sung-jong added, "I believe the content users see is only half of K-pop. Through this meaningful remastering project, I think we can discover the other half and expand the foundation of K-pop. We want to create opportunities for more people to learn about Korean music."
aespa, which has established itself as a global girl group with "Next Level" and "Savage," will remake S.E.S.'s hit song "Dreams Come True."
Karina said, "I've listened to and sung along to S.E.S. seniors' songs since I was young, so it's an honor to be able to present it in aespa's unique color through this great opportunity of the remastering project. I was particularly moved when Bada senior covered 'Next Level,' and I'm grateful that we could repay that through this project, which makes me want to work even harder."
Giselle added, "'Dreams Come True' is such a huge hit song, so we pondered how we could add aespa's color while preserving the original. We want to transform the songs of the seniors we loved into a modern version, receive a lot of love, and bring them back into the spotlight."
SM Entertainment is launching the remastering project in collaboration with YouTube. Starting with H.O.T.'s "Warrior's Descendant," released at 10 AM today, music videos and audio sources of hit songs by SM artists such as Shinhwa, Fly to the Sky, and BoA will be released in high definition. Original content, including Kangta's new rendition of "Freedom" with NCT's Sungchan and aespa's Winter appearing in the music video, and aespa's cover of S.E.S.'s "Dreams Come True," will also be released.
