Amid BTS's announcement of a temporary hiatus from group activities, Yoon Sang-hyun, a lawmaker from the ruling People Power Party, has argued for the passage of the so-called "BTS Military Service Exemption Law Revision Bill."

On the 20th, Rep. Yoon posted on his Facebook, "It is time for the National Assembly to choose the greater national interest without avoiding revisions (to the Military Service Act) for any reason. Otherwise, the golden age of K-pop may disappear like a mirage."

He claimed that while the stated reason for BTS's hiatus was the need for rest due to exhaustion, the main reason was the military service issue for members who must enlist within the year.

Rep. Yoon stated, "The agency announced its position that it would await the National Assembly's swift conclusion regarding the members' military service issues, but there has been no news yet. When BTS declared their hiatus, the stock value of their agency instantly evaporated by 2 trillion won."

He continued, "This shows that the impact of BTS's hiatus extends beyond the K-pop market to the Korean economy, and it is truly immense. Now is the time for the National Assembly to respond," he emphasized.

All BTS members, including Jin, RM, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, are South Korean nationals and are subject to active duty enlistment from 2023. Rep. Yoon proposed a revision to the Military Service Act last June that would allow popular culture artists who have made significant contributions to national interest to perform alternative service as arts and sports personnel, similar to classical artists. However, this revision bill was submitted to the National Assembly's National Defense Committee's bill review subcommittee in November last year but its passage was put on hold.
